Katarina Witt began to ice skate as early as age five years old. It was her chance to demonstrate her talent and gain entry into a Karl-Marx-Stadt special school specifically designed for gifted kids. Coach Jutta was also there. Witt made her mark in the second position she placed in the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. The elegance and grace of Witt drew the attention of all and she has dominated her sport ever since. Olympic success at the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the female gold medal in figure skating following a close-fought competition. A more competitive contest the following year, Witt was awarded the medal. In fact, she didn't win the free skating contest but she did win gold on the basis of results during the compulsory short and figure programme. Witt was the first woman after Sonja Haenie to win the winner of a second time in figure skating. Hall of Fame Witt had many successes as an acting career, but she returned to her sports to participate in her participation in the Lillehammer Winter Games of 1994. Despite not winning a gold medal, Witt was a hit with the spectators. Witt's induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame was held in 1995.
